Born in the Maze, Berker ibn Kudret never knew his father and left his home at the age of eight. Surviving as a young pickpocket, he might met an sad end, had his good fortune being caught by Gamze al-Rashid. The Dahabi, recognizing the boy's natural wit and intelligence, opted to bring him into his household. It was here that he became friends with Jibral al-Rashid, and earned top marks from his merchant teachers.

Berker continued his patronage under the al-Rashids, who brought him to the attention of the Council of Shelter, where he was given a tough assignment in his old haunting grounds, the Maze.

The young merchant took the assignment with a grin, knowing he was being tested, and knowing he was up to the task. He spent five years working in the Maze, and he did not break. During that time the Council of Shelter was headed by a man who had no love of upstarts, and he was eventually placed in a position where careers go to die, the Last Stop.

Practically abandoned, and surrounded by a wall, Berker had difficulties even getting into the area to scout it out, but his incredible streak of luck kept up, as the man found an ancient palace which had never been looted. There are stories that the place was haunted by an ancient spirit of chaos that attempted to play tricks on the young Berker. According to the tales, the clever young man tricked the creature into banishing itself, and allowing him to keep the treasures of the palace.

Bringing in all of those valuable ancient pieces was a coup and his enemies were forced to put him in the lime-light. When the Councillor for Shelter that had attempted to banish Berker died from a sudden and unexpected heart attack, he was still riding the wave of the popularity of his find. With the backing of Jibral and House Rashid, Berker found himself swept into office, where he has served ever since.
